With the success of the first Ferrari episode film director Rocky Jo created for streaming web series Webrides TV, he was tasked with another episode for one of Audi’s exclusive upcoming cars: The RS4. Rocky immediately wanted to push this car to its limit. So he and his crew set out to travel an hour outside of LA, and got to work on making a sizzling episode for the exotic car series.
With the temperature boiling over 100 degrees, filming in the desert can be brutal. However, in order to get those cinematic sandy shots of the car drifting across the landscape and kicking up dust, the elements shouldn’t be an excuse. Using a pair of professional racers and precise planning, the day was segmented into a variety of hero shots and racing shots depending on the sun and how complicated each racing shot would be. Often times, the car speeding at top speed needs to be filmed a minimal of 2 times. 1 for the camera car to film the car speeding. Another for the for the cameras to be attached to the car as it flies.
Logistically, the conditions require plenty of water, suntan lotion, and shade when possible. But no matter how you cut it, filming in the harsh elements is always a challenge – as there will always be events you can’t control. (and in our case, it was an impromptu blast of strong sand winds.)
Nevertheless, Rocky knew the importance of communicating safety and schedule with his crew, so they were able to film efficiently, effectively, without a single injury. And of course, they were able to capture top quality footage for their video production.
At the end of the day, Webrides TV was extremely pleased with the final episode, and it became one of the most viewed episodes for the series. A big thank you to the Famous Group, the producers, and crew and professional drives for making the video production a success.
